Requirements to run the software
- IBM Compatible PC
( MacIntosh is not supported) - Pentium 400 MHz or higher with 128 MB or more memory is recommended
- Windows 98 / 2000 / XP
I have had reports that it works on Windows 2003 and Vista, though I haven't tested it myself on these platforms. - English versions of Windows only
It does not work with French versions of Windows 2000 or XP unless you switch Windows from French to English. - Screen resolution at least 1024 x 768.
- More than 500 MB of hard disk space if you plan to load all the sound and picture files.
Installation instructions
By design the installation process is only semi-automated, allowing you to install the libraries you want, and to avoid overwriting your existing databases if you are doing a reinstallation. You need to be familiar with the use of Windows Explorer. Installation requires a number of stages:
- Installation of Bootleg application
- Copying down the databases you require (eg Led Zeppelin database)
- Copying down the Sound and Picture files
- Opening your databases for the first time and setting up Options settings for correct operation
The default installation assumes you install to c:\Program Files\Bootleg, and your CD-ROM drive is drive D:. If you install to another directory on your hard disk then please modify the instructions below accordingly.
Now choose your installation type (installation is easier for new users who do not have existing databases to upgrade):
- New installation
- Upgrading from a previous version of Bootleg
New Installation
- Application. (If you are running Windows ME, please see the note below).
There is a slightly different install process for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Window 2000 & XP. In all cases except for Windows ME, first insert the CD-ROM, and if the installation program does not start automatically then use Windows Explorer to navigate to the root directory of the CD-ROM drive (eg D:) and double-click on setup.exe.
Windows 98 and Me: The setup program will first update some system files, and you will be asked to reboot. Then run setup again and follow the instructions. (If you get into a loop here please contact me assistance).
Windows 2000 & XP: The install process will proceed without a reboot - just follow the instructions.
- The program is now installed, but so far has no data. I have purposely made the copying of data a manual process so existing databases will not be accidentally overwritten when upgrading your system. The following instructions will help you copy the data off the CD-ROM. If you already have data you don't want to risk over-writing, either take a backup copy of your data first, or copy the following data files into another temporary directory on your hard disk, and then selectively copy across just the files you want. For a new installation, you probably want to copy everything.
- Databases. These are located in the "Databases" directory on the CD, and are appropriately named, eg vbledzep.mdb = Led Zeppelin database.Using Windows Explorer, copy one or more databases file from the CD-ROM Databases directory into the directory on your hard disk where Bootleg was installed alongside boot32.exe, ie c:\Program Files\Bootleg.
vbledzep.mdb = Led Zeppelin
vb__page.mdb = Jimmy Page solo
vb_birds.mdb = Yardbirds
vb_jones.mdb = John Paul Jones solo (post Zeppelin)
vb_plant.mdb = Robert Plant solo
vbpurple.mdb = Deep Purple (database developed by another party and provided "as is")
vb_doors.mdb = The Doors (database developed by another party and provided "as is")
vbpplant.mdb = Page/Plant solo (post Zeppelin)
vbmodel.mdb = template used only when creating your own new database (most people don't do this!)
- Sounds & Picture files. Using Windows Explorer, copy the "Sounds" directory (which will include the 6 subdirectories) from the CD-ROM and paste it into "c:\Program Files\Bootleg". Do the same with the "Pictures" directory. This step is optional if you are really short of disk space. If you didn't copy down all the databases then you only need to copy the relevant subdirectories, but make sure you preserve the correct directory naming. You should end up with a directory structure like this:
c:\Program Files\Bootleg
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds\Zeppelin
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds\JPage
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds\JPJones
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds\PagePlant
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds\RPlant
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Sounds\YardBirds
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures\Zeppelin
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures\JPage
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures\JPJones
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures\PagePlant
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures\RPlant
c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Pictures\YardBirds
- Settings. You should now be able to select "Bootleg" from the start menu, choose a library, and open the libraries for the first time. Three windows will open. Before you do too much, select View-Options on the menu and set up any settings for the first time. For example, if you installed Bootleg to a directory other than c:\Program Files\Bootleg you will need to change the names for the Sound and Picture files. Also set up external RealAudio, MP3 and CD Players if you are going to use them (you can use Windows Media Player for both MP3 and external CD Player if you wish). If you will be using MP3 functionality then set up the directory or CD drive letter you will be using. The default startup library causes Bootleg to immediately open the selected database without displaying a selection windows first - if you have only loaded one database, eg Led Zeppelin, then check this box and select the Led Zeppelin database and startup will be faster.
- Further help information is given on other pages in the Help files, which will have been installed in the c:\Program Files\Bootleg\Help directory. You will need a web browser to read these files (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer). Finally, email me if you have a real problem!
Upgrading from a previous version of Bootleg
- Make a backup copy of your existing files, particularly the .MDB database files, in case something goes wrong with the installation!
- De-install your existing version. If you are running the 32-bit V2 of Bootleg, you should have an uninstall option in Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs (and uninstalling should not delete your .MDB files). If you were running the 16-bit version, manually delete the program and help file from the c:\bootleg directory.
- Application. Insert the CD-ROM and follow instructions as for "New Installation" step 1 above, noting the different process depending on your operating system.
- Databases. I assume you will want to keep and upgrade your existing database files (vbledzep.mdb, etc.) which you backed up above. Copy these files into the c:\Program Files\Bootleg\ directory. If you don't wish to keep your old databases then copy the databases off the CD as per "New Installation" step 3 above.
- When you start Bootleg and open one of your previous databases for the first time, additional tables will be automatically added to your database. No data or structures are deleted, but the tables added will initially be empty. I recommend you initially open ALL your existing databases to upgrade the structure (you will see a message in the status bar at the bottom left of the screen, momentarily, whilst the structure upgrade is taking place) before proceeding with any further steps here.
- Sounds & Picture files. As per "New Installation" step 4 above. If you already had Sounds and Picture files, then copying with overwrite will add and replace new files added by myself since your last installation. If you added your own files with different filenames they will not be overwritten - however, if you replaced and renamed some of the original files with your own (eg better Cover Art examples) you may wish to take a backup copy first and then copy back in your own files later.
- Updates: Unregistered users procedure - although you have lots of sound files and picture files on your hard disk, they aren't linked to your database, and the Info table will be empty. You will need to add them all manually and this will take a while (you should have registered!).
Adding sounds is straightforward, and you will find the long filenames and subdirectory names self-explanatory (no filename prefix generally refers to Led Zeppelin, prefixes of rp=Robert Plant, yb=Yardbirds, pp=Page/Plant, jp=Jimmy Page). Make sure the Options (choose Options from the View menu) are set up correctly to reference the correct subdirectory for each database.
Pictures may be for Recordings/Covers, Dates/Pictures, or Info/Pictures. Most are Recordings/Covers with the filename matching the Recording title. Those for the Dates/Pictures are prefixed with a date, and those for the Info table will look odd-ball or be names of people. If you have Microsoft Access, you can copy the entire Info Table and Plantations Table from the database on the CD-ROM into your database, ie open the CD-ROM \Databases\vbledzep.mdb, copy Info table, close, then open your own database on the hard disk and paste the Info table (deleting the empty one). If you don't have Microsoft access you can get the data for the Info and Plantation tables by temporarily copying in the databases from the CD-ROM, opening them (you may have to rename them temporarily, using the facility in Info/Library, to distinguish them from your own databases), and doing copy and paste operations.
- Updates: Registered users procedure - in order to update your databases, open a database and then open the Import window (toolbar button), select the Import tab, and select the appropriate file off the CD-ROM \Updates directory (lzupd.txt = Led Zeppelin, ppupd.txt = Page/Plant, rpupd.txt = Robert Plant, ybupd.txt = Yardbirds). You should import the Info table and Plantations table first, then the Sounds, Covers, DatePic, InfoPic. You can do the other tables later if you wish (you may want to redo Covers import again after importing new Recordings). This will automatically do most of the updates for you, putting in the links to the Sounds and Picture files in the \Sounds and \Pictures subdirectories.
Check the log file for any which were not automatically updated. You can do these by hand, or, for Sounds and Pictures, go to Import/Linkup. Import/Linkup checks for \Sounds and \Pictures which are not linked to any table, and allows you to link them up with a couple of mouse-clicks. You may even find this method preferable than doing the Import. Again, most file-names should be self-explanatory, with prefixes of rp=Robert Plant, yb=Yardbirds, pp=Page/Plant, jp=Jimmy Page (no prefix generally means Led Zeppelin).
A little effort is required here, but only a fraction of that required by unregistered users!
If you have installation problems
If you have any installation problems and are a registered user, contact me for assistance! There will be a log file st6inst.log (or similar name) in the c:\Program Files\Bootleg directory - please have this file ready to send to me on request.
