Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs)

UFOA large amount of weird and wonderful material has appeared about UFOs and extra terrestrials.  Whilst some sightings are physical phenomena such as planets, some are hoaxes, and some are completely unexplained, on this page I want to discuss the origin and existence of flying saucers.

Yes, flying saucers are real, and they do not come from outer space and they are not piloted by Greys.  The flying saucers that have been seen, filmed and observed on radar are of human origin, built by humans, flown by humans, and crashed by humans!

I vividly remember seeing footage on New Zealand TV news when a UFO was detected and filmed off the coast of Kaikoura in 1978/79.  At the time the usual explanations of planet Venus and lights from fishing boats were proposed, but clearly there was something else (ie neither Venus nor fishing boat lights show up on radar).  There was a small NZ military base in the area (Woodburne), and there were reports that aircraft may have been operating from it at the time.

The Germans were working on flying saucer technology during WW II, but they never perfected the technology.  Some of the Nazi's escaped to South America after the war and it appears they kept working on the technology.  The plans also seem to have come into possession of both the US and the Russians.  It is unlikely that they flew using anti-gravity techniques.  Some well documented designed used powerful motors designed to make the device hover (this was very inefficient).  Other interesting proposals have been based on charging a circular device so that it is repelled by the magnetic field of the Earth.  Whilst this sounds a good idea it also has practical problems, one being that the magnetic field of the Earth varies greatly and would thus cause the flying disk to wobble a lot.

Some disc designs include:

It is still unclear whether the flying machines were of German, Russian or US origin.  Certainly the US have been responsible for secret flying saucer programs, and have no doubt promulgated stories about extra-terrestrial origins to obfusciate any speculation about these secret programs. The fact that commercial or military designs have not emerged suggest that there are still practical problems with this technology compared to more conventional flying machines.

Flying discs have been constructed with aluminium foil, balsa wood, and made to levitate in the presence of a high electric field. Check out Asymmetrical Capacitors.  Whilst this phenomena is real and works, it is hard to see at present how this could be turned into practical commercial reality.  There is a big difference in lifting balsa wood in the presence of an extremely high electric field, and flying many tons of passengers and freight safely through the air!
